The Boy Scouts of America board members are currently meeting in Dallas, Texas to consider ending a controversial national ban on gay membership. Although the meeting is closed to the public, the organization announced last month it was considering removing the national restriction based on sexual orientation and leaving the decision to local chapters. President Obama said on Monday that he supports an end to the ban on gay members and scout leaders. Youth membership in the Boy Scouts has dropped 21 percent since 2000 to nearly 2.7 million. Adult leader membership has fallen 14 percent to just over 1 million, and the number of units has declined 12.6 percent to 108,971.Nearly 70% of Scouting units are chartered by faith-based groups.
