What is a civil case?
A civil case is a legal case in which individuals or businesses can sue each other. In Colorado, civil cases can include a variety of issues including disputes over contracts, property, or personal injury. Most of the time, civil cases are heard in the state’s district court system. In Colorado, personal injury cases are civil cases that involve a person filing a lawsuit against another individual or business for causing them harm. This harm may be physical or psychological and can include issues such as car accidents, medical negligence, and even product liability. The person filing the suit will assert that their injury is due to the negligence of the other party and will seek compensation for their losses. The defendant may be an individual, a business, or a government agency. Colorado law allows for a variety of outcomes in civil cases. The court can decide that a party must pay money to the other party, issue an injunction or restraining order requiring one party to cease a certain activity, or require the parties enter into a particular agreement. In a personal injury case, the court may award damages for bodily injury, emotional distress, financial losses, and other losses. Civil cases are heard by a judge and have less strict rules of evidence than criminal cases. In Colorado, if the parties are unable to reach a settlement out-of-court, a full trial may be necessary for the case to be resolved.
