What is a civil case?

A civil case is a lawsuit that is brought by a person or an organization in order to receive a legal remedy, such as financial compensation. In a civil case, the person or organization bringing the lawsuit, known as the plaintiff, seeks a monetary judgment from the person or organization they are suing, known as the defendant. This type of lawsuit is different from a criminal case, which is brought by the state or federal government against a defendant who is accused of breaking a law. In New Jersey, a civil case may be brought when two or more parties have a dispute that involves a contractual or civil issue. For example, if someone is injured in an accident and they believe another party is responsible, they may file a civil lawsuit in court to seek financial compensation for their losses, such as medical bills, lost wages, or pain and suffering. In addition, if a contract dispute arises between two or more parties, they may file a civil lawsuit in court to determine which party is liable for any damages caused by the dispute. If a civil lawsuit is filed in New Jersey, both parties must follow the rules of civil procedure established by the state. These rules cover everything from how a lawsuit is initiated to how evidence is presented and how the parties must behave during the course of the trial. After both parties have presented their case in court, the judge or jury will make a final determination on the dispute and issue a judgment, which may include an award of financial compensation to the plaintiff.
