What is a civil case?

A civil case is a type of legal dispute that does not involve a criminal penalty. In Pennsylvania, civil cases involve disputes between two or more parties, typically about a financial or contractual obligation. Civil cases usually involve disputes about money, property, or other interests between two or more people or organizations. In other words, civil cases are non-criminal in nature and arise from disputes between two private parties. Civil cases can involve accident law, such as when an incident occurs and one party is determined to be legally responsible for the injuries or damages to the other. If the injured party sues the responsible party, a civil case is opened. The civil case may also involve the enforcement of rights or the resolution of disputes between parties in contract law. The Pennsylvania court system has both state and local courts, and each court handles civil cases. The Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, the highest court in the state, has appellate jurisdiction over civil cases. This means that it may hear appeals when a party disagrees with the decision made by a lower court. Civil cases at the local level are handled in the county court of common pleas. It is responsible for hearing disputes between parties and deciding on remedies.
