What is a settlement conference?

A settlement conference is a special type of meeting that is held in order to resolve a civil lawsuit brought in a court of law in Minnesota. It typically involves both the parties involved in a dispute along with their attorneys. The goal of a settlement conference is to reach an agreement on a settlement which would resolve the dispute without the necessity of a trial. During the settlement conference, the parties involved in the dispute will present their legal arguments as to why their side is the correct one, present any additional evidence they have, and attempt to negotiate a settlement agreement. All parties must be willing to negotiate in good faith in order to reach a mutually beneficial settlement agreement. The settlement agreement must be approved by the court in order to be legally binding. It is beneficial for both sides to settle at a settlement conference since it avoids the time and expense of a trial, and both parties usually agree to the terms of the settlement agreement. Also, a trial can result in an unpredictable and long-lasting outcome that neither party may find desirable. Settling at a settlement conference also allows both parties to have input in the outcome of the dispute, which is far from guaranteed if the case goes to trial.
