What is a settlement conference?
A settlement conference is a meeting between the parties (plaintiff and defendant) involved in an accident case. This meeting is typically held before litigation begins. During this meeting, the parties will discuss the facts of the case and the legal issues that need to be resolved. The parties will then try to come to an agreement on how to settle the case without having to go through the court process. This agreement, if accepted by both parties, is legally binding. In Pennsylvania, the court may order a settlement conference in certain cases. This is done to help the parties come to an agreement and resolve their dispute more quickly and with less expense than if the case was litigated in court. These settlement conferences are overseen by a neutral third party called a mediator. The mediator is typically someone who is experienced in the particular type of accident law. The mediator will often help the parties to navigate the settlement conference process so that both parties can feel as though they have been heard and can come to an agreement. It is important that each party have a thorough understanding of their rights and obligations under Pennsylvania accident law before coming to the settlement conference. If the parties can come to a settlement agreement, it can often help to avoid costly and time-consuming litigation.
