What is a medical lien?
A medical lien is a type of legal document used in Colorado accident law. It is an agreement between a healthcare provider and the insurance company of an injured person. The medical lien allows the healthcare provider to be reimbursed for the services they provided to the injured person. The medical lien details the amount that the healthcare provider will be paid and ensures that they are paid before any other payment is made in regards to the accident. This is done in order to protect the healthcare provider from being left unpaid for the services they provided. The amount of the medical lien is usually determined by the amount of bills that need to be paid. This can include the cost of medical treatment, hospital bills, prescriptions, and any other medical expenses incurred by the injured person from their accident. The healthcare provider will place the medical lien on the insurance company’s claim after they have provided the injured party with the necessary care. Once the insurance company pays out their settlement, they are responsible for paying the healthcare provider according to the terms of the lien. Medical liens are important to Colorado accident law because they provide financial security for healthcare providers in the event of an accident. Without this type of agreement, a healthcare provider may not be able to be reimbursed for their services, leaving them at a financial loss.
