What are the different types of Admiralty Law?

Admiralty law is a branch of law that governs the relationships, rights, and duties of persons involved in navigation, shipping, and other maritime activities. In New Mexico, admiralty law is mainly concerned with the economic and environmental aspects of the state’s ports, waterways, and marine resources. There are two main types of admiralty law. The first, known as General Maritime Law, covers the rules and regulations that govern all aspects of ocean-based activities, including salvage, collisions, piracy, towage, pilotage, and marine insurance. The second, known as Admiralty Jurisdiction, covers cases brought before the courts seeking awards for damages caused by negligence or failure of certain maritime services. In addition, the U.S. federal government enacts maritime laws and regulations on a federal level. These laws and regulations generally cover the safety of passengers, crew, and merchandise on boats and other vessels, as well as the regulation of the U.S. Coast Guard and other maritime-related activities. Furthermore, admiralty law can also include the enforcement of international treaties and conventions regarding the marine environment, navigation, and maritime trade. Finally, admiralty law also includes issues relating to international trade, including the potential for disputes between nations regarding maritime boundaries, pollution, piracy, and other maritime issues. All of these different types of admiralty law are important for helping to ensure that people are safe and secure while engaging in maritime activities in New Mexico and across the globe.
