What is the difference between Maritime Law and Admiralty Law?
Admiralty Law, or Maritime Law as it is sometimes referred to, is a collection of laws that govern activities that take place on or over the waters. Maritime Law applies to the navigable waters of the United States, which includes the coasts of Florida. Admiralty Law applies to commercial maritime activities, such as the operation of vessels, shipping goods and services, marine insurance, admiralty jurisdiction, and international trade. The main difference between Maritime Law and Admiralty Law is that Maritime Law is broader and encompasses all maritime related activities, while Admiralty Law is more focused and only covers those activities related to commercial maritime activities. Maritime Law also deals with the rights and obligations of the vessel owner and crew, while Admiralty Law deals with the rights and obligations of the passenger, shippers, and cargo owners. Maritime Law also includes other activities such as recreational and fishing activities, piracy, personal injury, and salvage. Admiralty Law on the other hand only covers those activities related to the operation of a vessel, goods, and services, such as shipbuilding, chartering of vessels, marine insurance, and international trade. Additionally, Admiralty Law deals with regulations of international trade such as ship registration, licensing, and maritime safety and security. In conclusion, the main differences between Maritime Law and Admiralty Law are that Maritime Law is more general and covers a wider range of activities while Admiralty Law is more focused and is only concerned with activities related to commercial maritime activities.
