What is the difference between Maritime Law and Admiralty Law?

Admiralty law and maritime law, while both dealing with the same subject matter of disputes arising at sea, are two separate branches of law. Maritime law, also known as the law of the sea, is a branch of international law that deals with the legal rights and duties of individuals, businesses, and nations in relation to the use of the sea. Maritime law covers such areas as salvage, jurisdiction of the courts, merchant shipping, piracy, and where applicable, admiralty jurisdiction. Admiralty law, also known as admiralty and maritime law, is a distinct and separate body of law that deals specifically with legal proceedings that arise out of the use of the sea or other navigable waters. Admiralty law covers such topics as collisions between vessels, insurance of maritime transactions, the maritime carriage of goods, and salvage of persons and property from the sea. Admiralty law is created by custom, treaties, and international conventions that carry the force of law in countries that have ratified them. In Maine, admiralty law is governed by Title 14 of the Maine Revised Statutes, which addresses various applicable provisions, such as the jurisdiction of the Admiralty Court, the limitation of liability of ship owners and operators, and other matters related to the nautical industry. Maritime law and admiralty law differ in that maritime law generally covers broader topics related to the overall use of the sea, while admiralty law is much more specific and deals with only the issues of legal disputes that arise out of the use of the sea or other navigable waters.
