What is the history of Admiralty Law?

Admiralty law is a branch of law related to marine commerce and navigation that has been recognized in courts in the state of Washington for centuries. It began in the early 1700s in England, where the jurisdiction of the High Court of Admiralty was established by the Acts of Union. In the United States, the Judiciary Act of 1789 gave the federal court system trial jurisdiction in matters of admiralty and maritime law. The first admiralty court in the United States opened in 1802 in New York. In Washington, the Maritime and Admiralty Law Court was established in 1807 as a part of the Supreme Court of the Washington Territory. Over the years, Admiralty law in Washington has been amended and improved. In 1925, the state legislature adopted the Federal Admiralty Rules and adopted the Admiralty Jurisdiction Act of 1948. In the late 20th century, the Washington State Admiralty Rules were adopted to further strengthen the state’s jurisdictional authority in Admiralty matters. Today, Admiralty Law in Washington is an important part of the state legal system. It primarily governs disputes related to maritime contracts, marine insurance, cargo claims, collision liability, and other matters related to marine commerce. Cases involving Admiralty Law are tried in the court of Common Pleas for each county in the state.
