What are the differences between Admiralty Law and common law?

Common law is not codified and is based on precedent, meaning the outcomes of court cases that have come before it. Common law applies to a variety of legal issues, including property, contracts, torts, and criminal matters. The main difference between admiralty law and common law is the scope of their application. While admiralty law deals exclusively with maritime activities, common law covers a much broader range of legal issues. Moreover, common law is codified in statutes, while admiralty law is not. Nonetheless, admiralty law requires courts to look to common law for guidance in determining the outcome of a case, along with other sources such as treaties and international law.
