What is the Admiralty Law of salvage?

Admiralty law, or maritime law, is a set of laws and regulations governing incidents and activities that take place at sea or on other water bodies. In Florida, admiralty law of salvage applies when people or entities are trying to save a vessel, cargo, or other property that is in danger of being lost or abandoned. Salvage is a legal term that refers to the process of rescuing of vessels, cargo, or other property from a peril on the sea, or from any other waters, such as rivers, lakes, and harbors. In order for a person or entity to be eligible for the benefits of admiralty law of salvage in Florida, he or she must prove that: the vessel, cargo, or other property was in danger of being lost or abandoned; reasonable attempts were made to save the vessel, cargo, or other property; and that the salvage efforts were successful. Those who succeed in salvaging a vessel, cargo, or other property are entitled to a salvage award in the form of money or property. The amount of the award is determined based on a variety of factors, such as the degree of risk the salvors faced, the value of the salvaged property, and the skill required to perform the salvage. In Florida, admiralty law of salvage is primarily governed by state and federal laws, including the Florida Salvage Act and the federal Salvage Statute. Generally, the admiralty law of salvage is designed to encourage people or entities to assist in salvaging vessels, cargo, or other property in danger of being lost or abandoned. Salvors who act in good faith and successfully salvage vessels, cargo, or other property are entitled to a reward for their efforts.
