What is the Admiralty Law relating to ship registration?
Admiralty law is an international law that governs all maritime-related activities. In Massachusetts, it is established and enforced by both federal and state laws. The Admiralty Law relating to ship registration is a system of rules that establishes the requirements for registering a vessel in Massachusetts. This includes having a correctly executed registration form, ownership documents, and a valid certificate of survey. In order to be eligible for registration, a vessel must be of a certain size, type, and purpose. Additionally, the owner must be at least eighteen years of age and be a U.S. citizen, or a permanent resident alien with a valid immigration document. The owner must also provide proof of financial responsibility, such as a certificate of insurance, in the form of an insurance policy or other acceptable proof of financial responsibility. Once a vessel is registered, it must be renewed regularly in accordance with the state’s laws and regulations. The registration is valid for a period of not more than two years, and all boats registered in Massachusetts must display a valid registration decal at all times while in use. Additionally, owners of registered vessels must obtain a valid Massachusetts navigation license in order to operate in local waters. Registration of a vessel is mandatory for any vessel over 8 feet in length that is propelled by a motor, sail, or any other means. All vessels registered in Massachusetts are subject to inspection by the state’s law enforcement agency. Failure to comply with the state’s regulations may result in the vessel being seized and/or the owner being fined.
