What is the Admiralty Law relating to ship registration?
Admiralty Law is a distinct body of law in the United States that governs the maritime industry and all related matters. In Missouri, the law relating to ship registration is largely set out in Title 46 of the U.S. Code. Under the law, all vessels that operate on U.S. waters and have a gross tonnage of at least five tons must be registered with the U.S. Coast Guard. Vessels must also have proper documentation from the Coast Guard in order to sail in most waters. The law also sets out the requirements for registering a vessel. This includes the information that must be provided to the Coast Guard, such as the name of the vessel, its type, length, and date of construction. The owner must also provide proof of U.S. citizenship, and if the vessel is to be used for commercial purposes, an application for a Certificate of Documentation must also be submitted. Once all of the required documents have been submitted, the vessel will be registered and its registration number will be issued. In addition, the law outlines several responsibilities of vessel owners. For instance, owners are required to keep their vessels in a seaworthy condition, possess valid insurance, and pay applicable taxes. They are also required to inspect their vessels periodically and adhere to all applicable laws and safety regulations. Finally, any changes in the vessel’s owner or type must be reported to the Coast Guard.
