What is the scope of Admiralty Law with regard to domestic maritime law?
Admiralty Law, sometimes referred to as maritime law, is the body of law that governs disputes and other legal matters unique to activities that occur on and around navigable waters. In Kansas, Admiralty Law is a subdivision of federal law that extends to all activities and disputes involving vessels and navigable waters in the state. The scope of Admiralty Law with regard to domestic maritime law is broad and encompasses a variety of issues, including those involving maritime contracts, salvaging goods and ships, and shipping regulations. Admiralty Law also applies to disputes arising out of work-related injuries on vessels, the operation of vessels or related equipment, and other issues related to operating a vessel. Admiralty Law also encompasses regulations concerning the preservation of health and safety while on board vessels, as well as the enforcement of seamen’s rights and obligations. Furthermore, Admiralty Law governs the rights and duties of pilots in navigating vessels along navigable waters, as well as the consequences of collisions involving vessels. Additionally, Admiralty Law applies to claims arising out of pollution, as well as the liability of owners and charterers for the loss or damage to cargo that is transported on vessels. It also addresses the rights of passengers who are injured on vessels, and the rights of those who may have been affected by a spill of oil or other hazardous substances. Finally, Admiralty Law governs the enforcement of liens on vessels, including the sale and distribution of proceeds of such liens.
