What is the scope of Admiralty Law with respect to vessel salvage operations?

Admiralty law governs the rights and responsibilities of vessels in regards to salvage operations. Salvage is the act of rescuing vessels or cargo from a danger that could lead to destruction or loss. Those who perform salvage can be rewarded for their efforts, either through a financial reward from the vessel or its owner or through a lien on the vessel or cargo. Admiralty law distinguishes between voluntary salvage, where those performing the salvage have voluntarily agreed to the terms of the salvage and received some compensation; and compulsory salvage, where it was necessary to salvage the vessel or cargo from danger and no agreement was made beforehand. In California, admiralty law defines the legal rights and duties of vessel owners and salvors. It covers the responsibilities of the vessel owner to reward those performing the salvage and the rights of the salvors to payment for their efforts. Vessel owners must ensure that the salvors are reasonably compensated for their efforts, taking into consideration any losses sustained by the salvors. The scope of admiralty law with respect to vessel salvage operations is broad and includes the maritime law which governs the activities of common carriers; the law of marine insurance; and the law of maritime liens. It also covers the different types of salvage operations, the rights of salvors and their legal remedies, the legal actions which can be taken against vessel owners for failing to reward salvors and the powers of courts to intervene in salvage operations in the interest of the public.
