What is the purpose of the Federal Register?

The Federal Register serves an important purpose in Tennessee and throughout the United States. It is the official source of what is known as “Administrative Law”. Administrative law is the body of laws that are created and enforced by the executive branch of the federal government. The Federal Register is the method of collecting and publishing this administrative law. It was created in 1935 as part of the Administrative Procedure Act and is published every business day. In the Federal Register, agencies of the federal government publish rules and regulations, proposed rules, and public notices. The Register also serves as the legal source for any agencies’ actions and their binding authority. The Federal Register in Tennessee includes the President’s executive orders and other federal government agency publications, which are all published for public use and scrutiny. Through publication of the Federal Register, local law offices, legal firms, and the public can access important information used to complete many steps in the building of a legal case. This is because when a regulation is published in the Federal Register, it has the effect of law. The purpose of the Federal Register is to inform the public of the law of the land and ensure government accountability. This is a critical part of the foundation that Administrative Law is built upon, and without it, businesses and citizens across Tennessee and the United States would not be able to know how the federal government functions.
