Do adoptive parents have the same rights over an adopted child as a biological parent?
Adoption is a legal process in Texas that transfers parental rights and responsibilities from a child’s birth parent to the adoptive parent. When a successful adoption has taken place, the legal relationship between the adoptive parent and the adopted child is much the same as that of a biological parent and their child. The adoptive parents have the same rights as a biological parent over the adopted child. This includes the right to make decisions regarding the child’s physical and mental health, education, religion, and welfare. Texas law also grants the adoptive parents the same financial obligations as biological parents, such as providing the child with basic necessities such as food, shelter, and clothing. The court also recognizes and honors the adoptive parent’s right to discipline the child in a reasonable manner. The adoptive parents have the legal authority to make decisions about the child’s upbringing, such as what school they attend or which religion they follow. Adopted children also have the same rights as biological children, which includes the right to inherit from the adoptive parents. An adopted child also enjoys the same legal protection from abuse and neglect as any other child. In Texas, adoption creates a lifelong and legal relationship between the adoptive parents and the adopted child. Adoptive parents have the same rights and responsibilities as biological parents and are expected to provide the same love and care as any other parent.
