What is an intercountry adoption?
Intercountry adoption is the process of adopting a child from a foreign country, usually by citizens of another country. In Arizona, intercountry adoption is regulated by the U.S. Department of State and the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services. When a family chooses to adopt a child from a different country, the process can be complicated and requires special procedures and paperwork. The adoptive family must meet the requirements of both their home country and the foreign country they wish to adopt from. In Arizona, the adoptive family must first register with the U.S. Department of State to begin the process. The family must then contact an adoption agency that is authorized to handle adoptions in the foreign country, complete the required paperwork, and submit a home study to the agency. Once the paperwork has been completed, the adoptive family will be able to travel to the foreign country to meet the child and complete the adoption process. Depending on the country, this process may involve court hearings or other steps. When the family returns to Arizona, they must complete any additional paperwork requested by the Arizona Department of Economic Security, including an annual review of the adoption. Once the adoption is finalized, the family can apply for a U.S. visa for the child and obtain an Arizona birth certificate.
