What are the requirements for adoption from foster care?
In Oklahoma, prospective adoptive parents must meet certain requirements in order to adopt a child from foster care. These requirements are set by both the state and federal governments. First, any prospective adoptive parent must be over the age of 18, legally able to adopt, and of legal capacity to make decisions and provide care for the adopted child. Prospective adoptive parents must have completed the adoption home study process, which includes interviews and background checks. All prospective adoptive parents are also required to attend pre-adoption training, which provides information about caring for, understanding, and providing support for an adopted child. In addition, any prospective adoptive parents must have financial resources to provide for the care and support of the child, and must provide medical insurance for the adoptive child. Finally, the prospective adoptive parents must comply with all applicable federal adoption laws and the rules, regulations, and policies of the child’s placement or originating agency. These requirements are often determined by the state and can be quite complex, so the prospective adoptive parents should become familiar with these rules and requirements prior to beginning the adoption process.
