What is a closed adoption?

A closed adoption, or a confidential adoption, is a type of adoption where the identities of the biological parents are not disclosed to the adoptive parents. In a closed adoption, the agency facilitating the adoption will act as a go-between in the adoption process, connecting the two families but keeping their identities confidential. The identities of the adoptive parents and the biological parents are not revealed to one another and communication between the two families is limited or nonexistent. In Oklahoma, closed adoptions are the most common form of adoption. It is believed that a closed adoption is in the best interest of the child, in order to ensure privacy and confidentiality. Additionally, since the identities of the biological parents are not revealed, the adoptive parents are spared the potentially complicated emotions that may accompany learning the identities of the child’s biological parents. Closed adoptions can also be beneficial to the biological parents, as it gives them peace of mind knowing that their identities are kept confidential. Furthermore, it gives them a sense of control, allowing them to make a plan for the future of their child without feeling pressure or guilt. However, closed adoptions can also have drawbacks for the adoptive family. Because the identities of the biological parents is kept private, the adoptive parents may not have access to important medical information about their child’s biological parents, which may be important in certain circumstances. Additionally, the child may feel a sense of loss by not having information about their biological parents and family history.
