What is a post-adoption contact agreement?

A post-adoption contact agreement is an agreement between all parties involved in an adoption in the state of Washington. It is an agreement that defines the level and type of contact that the adoptive parents, the birth parents, and the adopted child will be able to have with one another. This agreement typically specifies the frequency of contact, the type of contact (e.g. face-to-face meetings, phone calls, or written communication), and any other terms and conditions surrounding the contact. Post-adoption contact agreements are written to benefit the child and other parties involved in the adoption and to make sure the child will maintain significant ties to their biological family. Post-adoption contact agreements are not legally binding, however, they are taken into account by courts if disputes arise. Post-adoption contact agreements can also be changed or modified if both the adoptive and birth families agree. It is important to note that post-adoption contact agreements typically do not provide for financial support from the birth family to the adoptive family.
