What is a special needs adoption subsidy?

A special needs adoption subsidy is a financial assistance program offered by the state of California to help families cover the costs associated with adopting a child with special needs. This type of subsidy is provided to families who have adopted a child who has been determined to have a physical, mental, or emotional disability or handicap that imposes special and costly needs or services. This determination is made by the State Department of Social Services (CDSS) and is based on a variety of factors. The subsidy is generally available for children who are between the ages of 0-14 years old and who have a physical, mental, or emotional handicap or disability that requires special and costly needs or services. These needs and services must be assessed and approved by the county or region in which the child lives. The subsidy is also available for siblings of a child who has already been adopted and who have been determined to have special needs or services. Once the determination is made, the family is eligible to receive the subsidy which will cover a portion of the expenses associated with the adoption of the special needs child. The amount of the subsidy is determined by the CDSS and is based on the individual circumstances of the family and the needs of the child. The subsidy can help families cover the costs of medical care, therapy, educational services, social services, and any other costs associated with caring for the special needs child.
