What is the National Organic Program (NOP)?

The National Organic Program (NOP) is a federally-regulated program which governs organic farming and agricultural production in the United States. It is a part of the United States Department of Agriculture and was established in 1990 in order to provide uniform national standards for the labeling of organic products. In Georgia, the NOP sets standards for agricultural production and handling in order to ensure organic products maintain a certain quality. These standards include requirements such as limiting the use of synthetic substances and prohibiting the use of genetically modified organisms. Additionally, organic producers must deliver an Annual Organic System Plan that includes information on the organic practices they follow. NOP certified organic products can be identified by the ‘USDA Organic’ seal on the product label. This seal indicates that the product has been produced according to the NOP standards and has been certified by a USDA accredited agent or certifying organization. NOP regulations also apply to organic imports and any products labeled as organic must comply with the NOP standards. These standards are regularly reviewed and revised as necessary to ensure organic products meet the highest standards of quality.
