What is the National Organic Program (NOP)?
The National Organic Program, or NOP, is a federal law that regulates the production and labeling of organic agricultural products in the United States. This program was implemented by the United States Department of Agriculture in 2002 and is the national standard for organic agriculture. The NOP establishes requirements for production, handling, and labeling of organically produced agricultural products in order to ensure that the products meet certain standards. The NOP has three main goals. The first goal is to protect the integrity of the organic food industry. To achieve this, the program requires that all organic agricultural products are produced and handled in accordance with certain standards outlined by the NOP. The second goal is to provide a level playing field for organic producers to compete in the market. The program also requires that all organic labeling and advertising meets the same requirements, regardless of where it is produced. The third goal is to protect the environment by reducing the use of certain synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. In New Hampshire, all organic agricultural products produced and sold must comply with the National Organic Program and the standards outlined in the NOP. Any labeling or advertising of organic products must also meet the requirements of the NOP. Failure to comply with the NOP may result in fines or other penalties.
