What is the National Organic Program (NOP)?

The National Organic Program (NOP) is a federal program designed to ensure that organically produced agricultural products, including livestock, meet certain standards of production. This program was created in 2002 and is overseen by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). It is designed to ensure that agricultural products labeled “organic” adhere to certain standards and regulations, including the use of organic farming methods, natural pest control and sustainable resource management. The NOP sets parameters for organic production in Virginia, including requirements for organic land, certification of organic farmers, organic labeling, and organic products and practices. In order to obtain certification as an organic farmer, producers must provide evidence that they are following the NOP rules and regulations. These include maintaining appropriate soil management, crop rotation, and pest management practices, as well as eliminating synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. In addition to organic production requirements, the NOP also outlines rules related to organic labeling and organic product safety. Food labeled as “organic” must meet strict guidelines that specify which raw materials, production methods, and product handling techniques can be used. The NOP also requires organic producers to test their products for contaminants before they are sold. Ultimately, the National Organic Program (NOP) helps to ensure that agricultural products labeled as “organic” meet certain standards and regulations, providing peace of mind for the consumer and producers alike. Its rigorous standards and regulations help ensure that Virginia’s agricultural products are safe and meet the highest standards of quality.
