What is the Clean Water Act and how does it relate to agriculture?

The Clean Water Act is a federal law enacted in 1972 to protect and maintain the quality of natural water resources such as rivers, lakes, streams, and underground aquifers. It requires any party responsible for polluting the water to take steps to reduce the amount of contamination and requires the establishment of water quality standards. In terms of agriculture, the Clean Water Act has been used to address a wide variety of issues related to water pollution caused by agricultural activity. This includes runoff from agricultural land, use of sewage sludge as fertilizer, and the disposal of hazardous waste associated with farming operations. The Clean Water Act requires agricultural operations to have permits for discharging pollutants into waterways and to develop plans for reducing agricultural pollution. For example, farmers are required to control runoff by installing cover crops, terraces, and buffer strips to minimize the amount of soil and fertilizer entering streams and rivers. Farmers are also required to store hazardous wastes like pesticides in proper containers and dispose of them properly. Finally, the Clean Water Act restricts the amount of nitrogen and phosphorus used in fertilizer and requires farmers to monitor their operations to ensure compliance. The Clean Water Act has helped improve the quality of water in Florida and throughout the nation by reducing water pollution caused by agricultural activity. It has allowed farmers to continue to use the land responsibly while also protecting the quality of the water resources that are so important to the area’s health and economy.
