What is the Fair Labor Standards Act and how does it relate to agricultural labor?

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) is a U.S. law that sets standards for wages, hours, and overtime pay for workers. It applies to all 50 states, including Washington. Agricultural labor is included in the provisions of the FLSA. Specifically, the law sets wages, hours and overtime pay standards for farmworkers whose work is considered to be agricultural labor. This includes employees working in the fields and packing houses, as well as those working in aquaculture, horse and poultry farms. Employers must pay their farm employees at least the federal minimum wage. Furthermore, any employee who works more than 40 hours in a week must be paid overtime wages – one and one half times their regular rate. In addition to these requirements, the FLSA also requires agricultural employers to keep accurate records of the hours worked by their employees and to display the applicable federal and state minimum wage posters in a visible place. This ensures that agricultural employees are aware of their rights under the law, so they can be properly compensated for their work. Overall, the FLSA protects agricultural employees by providing minimum standards that employers must adhere to regarding wages, hours, and overtime pay. Without these standards, agricultural workers would be at risk of unfair pay and long hours of work, with no overtime pay or other benefits.
