What are the laws governing the use of animal antibiotics and growth hormones?
Animal antibiotics and growth hormones can be used for many agricultural purposes, such as treating diseases, increasing productivity, and aiding in weight gain. However, Connecticut has laws in place to regulate the use of these drugs and hormones. The Connecticut Department of Agriculture requires that anyone using animal antibiotics and growth hormones obtain a permit from the department. Applicants must provide evidence of the need for use, including documentation from a veterinarian that both validates the need for the drugs and includes an appropriate treatment regimen. These permits have an expiration date and must be reapplied for at least one year after the initial permit was granted. Permits can also be revoked at any time due to misuse or failure to follow the treatment regimen. There are also regulations in place that restrict the use of certain antibiotics and hormones that are not approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). For example, no hormones that are used for the growth of cattle are approved for use in other livestock, and no antibiotics can be used as a growth enhancer. Finally, the Connecticut Department of Agriculture requires that all use of antibiotics and growth hormones be reported to their office, including the amount used, date of use, and the ID tag number of the animals to which it was administered. This information is kept on file in order to ensure that the drugs are being used properly and safely.
