What are the laws regulating the use of hormones in agriculture?
In Washington, laws regulating the use of hormones in agriculture are put in place to protect the health of people and livestock. These laws primarily focus on the use of growth hormones in cattle, as the introduction of the hormones can have drastic effects on the animals and can cause a number of health problems. In order to regulate the use of hormones in Washington, all non-therapeutic hormones administered to cattle must be approved by the Washington Department of Agriculture (WSDA). Any growth hormones used must be approved and registered by the WSDA as well. The WSDA requires periodic monitoring of treated animals to ensure that the hormone is being used properly and is not causing any negative effects. In addition, the use of hormones in agricultural products must be reported to the WSDA. All products that contain hormones must be clearly labeled with the type and amount of hormone used. This allows consumers to make informed decisions about their food purchases. Finally, the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA) regulates the use of hormones in agriculture. According to the act, all hormones used in agriculture must be approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Additionally, all food products containing hormones must be labeled as such. By adhering to these laws, Washington can ensure that the use of hormones in agriculture does not have a negative impact on public and animal health.
