What is the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act (FSRI) and how does it relate to agricultural production?

The Farm Security and Rural Investment Act (FSRI) of 2002 was enacted by Congress in order to improve the economic viability of U.S. agricultural production. The FSRI is legislation that authorizes a wide array of programs that directly benefit farmers, ranchers, and rural communities. These programs are intended to both increase production and boost farm income. Specifically, the Act provides support and assistance to agricultural producers through direct and counter-cyclical payments, conservation initiatives, crop insurance and credit, rural development, research activities and market promotion, renewable energy programs, and rural area infrastructure improvements. The FSRI is also responsible for providing permanent authority to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to implement programs aimed at improving the sustainability of agriculture. These programs include initiatives to help farmers develop conservation plans that conserve energy, reduce soil erosion, and protect water quality. The FSRI also strengthens farm safety-net programs, such as providing increased loan opportunities, increased commodity price supports, and a new Dairy Price Support Program. The Farm Security and Rural Investment Act is one of the most important pieces of legislation for the agricultural industry, as it serves as the foundation for a variety of policies and programs that support U.S. farmers, ranchers and rural communities. These programs are intended to increase production and improve farm income, while also promoting conservation and rural development. This Act is especially important for Washington farmers, as it provides the necessary support and assistance to ensure the long-term success of agricultural production in the state.
