What are the regulations governing the transport of farm animals?

In Pennsylvania, there are several regulations that govern the transport of farm animals. All vehicles used to transport livestock must be approved and licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA) through the state’s Animal Health Division. For the safety of the animals, the vehicle must be designed to prevent escape and injury. It must have solid walls and floors that are properly maintained and have a minimum of two doors that are wide enough to provide adequate ventilation. The vehicle must be equipped with adequate lighting, and animals must be provided with food and water during transport. In addition, any person who transports farm animals in the state must obtain a license from the PDA. The license must be displayed in the vehicle that is transporting the livestock and must be renewed each year. All livestock must wear an official identification tag and be reported to the PDA prior to transport. The welfare of the animals must be taken into account, and all transport must be done in a humane and safe manner. Animals must not be transported for more than 12 hours at a time, and during transportation, animals must not be subjected to extreme temperatures. Animals must also be allowed out of the vehicle for regular rest stops. Consequences for violating these regulations can be severe. Anyone found transporting livestock in an unsafe or inhumane manner is liable for hefty fines and may even face jail time.
