What is the FAA's role in aircraft noise control?
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) plays an important role in aircraft noise control. The FAA creates regulations that determine the types of aircraft that are allowed in the air and the allowable noise levels for the aircraft. These regulations are created based on factors such as the type of aircraft, the size of the engine, and the types of operations that the aircraft are used for. In addition, the FAA also administers a noise abatement program. This program helps to reduce aircraft noise in the vicinity of airports by setting limits on how close aircraft can fly to buildings, residential areas, and other sensitive areas. The FAA also works with local airports to create noise compatibility plans. These plans identify ways to reduce the impact of aircraft noise in the surrounding community. Some of the strategies used in noise compatibility plans include using quieter-aircraft technology, reducing night-time flights, and encouraging aircraft to fly at higher altitudes in order to reduce noise levels. By establishing regulations and managing noise abatement programs, the FAA is able to ensure that aircraft noise is minimized around airports and in the communities around them. The FAA also works with the State of Kansas to ensure that aircraft operators are adhering to the applicable noise regulations.
