What types of aircraft are subject to international aviation regulations?
International aviation regulations, such as the Chicago Convention, are designed to govern the safety of all aircraft operating internationally. Aircraft regulated by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which is a governing body of the United Nations, are subject to international aviation regulations. This includes all turbojet and turboprop-powered airplanes, as well as all non-turbine-powered, fixed-wing airplanes with a maximum takeoff weight of 33,000 pounds or more. Helicopters, gliders, hot air balloons, and other light aircraft, such as ultralight aircraft, are not subject to international aviation regulations. In Florida, aircraft subject to international aviation regulations must be registered with the Federal Aviation Administration, and must have an airworthiness certificate issued by the FAA. Operators must also comply with all U.S. aviation regulations, such as training requirements, air traffic control requirements, and speech communications regulations. Additionally, all aircraft must meet any applicable international safety standards, such as aircraft maintenance and airworthiness standards. Failure to meet these regulations can result in fines, suspension of airworthiness certificates, and even criminal charges.
