What are the requirements for airspace use?
In Louisiana, as in other states, airspace is a limited resource and it is regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in order to ensure that air traffic is managed safely and efficiently. Generally, the requirements for airspace use in Louisiana can be summarized as follows: 1. Aircraft are generally required to stay within an altitude of 1,000 feet or below. 2. Aircraft must remain at least 500 feet from any person, vessel, vehicle, or structure not under the control of the aircraft pilot. 3. Aircraft are prohibited from operating within 5 nautical miles of any major airport or military base without prior authorization. 4. Aircraft are generally not permitted to operate between the hours of 1:00 am to 6:00 am local time. 5. Aircraft must maintain an altitude of at least 2,000 feet above congested areas and populated areas unless taking off or landing. 6. Aircraft must always give way to other aircraft, remain clear of wake turbulence, and remain at least 500 feet away from other aircrafts. 7. Aircraft must always remain in visual contact with the ground and they must not be operated while using drugs or alcohol. The FAA also requires all pilots and their aircraft to be in compliance with local, state, and federal laws. Violation of the airspace regulations can result in criminal charges and hefty fines. Therefore, all pilots are expected to understand and follow the airspace requirements properly to maintain safety and efficiency while flying.
