What are the requirements for airspace use?
In South Carolina, all aircraft must operate in accordance with the Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) which include rules and regulations for the safe and efficient use of airspace. FARs are intended to promote safety and organization for all aircraft operations. The FAA regulates the airspace by dividing it into Classes A, B, C, D, E, and G. Aircraft operations in Class A airspace require a IFR flight plan and clearance from Air Traffic Control. Class B airspace requires an aircraft to have two-way radio communication with ATC, as well as an ATC clearance, when operating in this airspace. Class C airspace requires an aircraft to have two-way radio communication with ATC and a clearance when operating in the area. The aircraft must also be equipped with a Mode-C transponder. Class D airspace requires the aircraft to have two-way radio communication with ATC and an ATC clearance when operating in the area. Class E airspace requires the aircraft to have two-way radio communication with ATC and a clearance when operating in the area, while Class G airspace requires VFR flight plans and no ATC clearance. In general, all aircraft operations in South Carolina must comply with the FARs and all applicable airspace requirements. The FARs and airspace requirements help to ensure the safety of all aircraft operations, and it is important to familiarize yourself with them before any aircraft flight.
