What is the purpose of the International Air Transport Association (IATA)?
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is an international trade association representing the world’s airlines. It was founded in 1945 with the purpose of creating global standards for the safe and efficient operation of air travel. IATA works to ensure the highest standards are maintained throughout the industry. In Kansas, IATA provides guidance on the necessary regulatory, operational and financial requirements to operate Air Transport in the State. IATA’s mission is to represent, lead and serve the airline industry. This includes establishing standards and practices related to the safe and secure operation of air travel, as well as helping to create a business environment conducive to the financial success of its members. This includes working with government agencies to ensure the industry meets environmental and safety regulations, and developing codes of practice for the operations of aircraft. IATA also works to facilitate international air travel by setting standards for baggage handling, ticketing and check-in procedures, and handling of passenger information. The organization is also involved in promoting fair competition between competing airlines and providing a platform for airline executives to discuss international aviation matters. In addition, IATA is involved in setting international standards for aircraft maintenance and pilot training to ensure the continued safety of passengers and crew. In Kansas, IATA works closely with the State’s aviation governing bodies to ensure Air Transport operations are conducted in a safe and secure manner.
