What are the legal requirements for pilot training and certification?
In Louisiana, all pilots must be properly trained and certified to fly aircraft. Training for aviation activities must be done responsibly and with appropriate safety procedures. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires all pilots to have at least a Private Pilot Certificate or better. This involves a written exam, an oral exam, and a practical test. To obtain a Private Pilot Certificate, a student pilot must have at least 35 hours of flight time and a passing grade on both the written and practical tests. Pilots must also complete ground school classes as part of their training. Ground school involves instruction in aircraft systems, aeronautical decision-making, navigation, airspace and regulations, and general knowledge of aviation topics. The FAA requires at least a certain amount of time in the classroom to be completed for each type of pilot certificate. In addition to completing the training requirements, pilots must pass a medical examination and obtain a First or Second-Class Medical Certificate from the FAA. This exam must be taken periodically in order to remain in compliance with the law. Finally, pilots must complete a recurrent training program to update their knowledge and skill sets. This training includes refresher courses, new technology, and flight reviews. In order to stay qualified to fly, pilots must continue to stay up to date and meet the requirements for pilot training and certification.
