What are the legal requirements for aviation fuel?
The legal requirements for aviation fuel are outlined in North Carolina by the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA). The AOPA states that aircraft operators are required to use aviation gasoline (avgas) or jet fuel when operating their aircraft in North Carolina. Aviation gasoline must meet the standards set by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Avgas must be 100-octane low-lead fuel and must not contain any additives or other compounds that can cause harm to the aircraft or its engine. Jet fuel must be kerosene-based fuel and must meet the requirements specified by the FAA. In North Carolina, all fuel used for aircraft operation must be purchased from an FAA-approved supplier. AOPA requires all fuel used to be approved, tested, and inspected for quality and purity prior to pumping. All fuel must be treated in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines and must be stored in a clean and safe container. In addition, fuel must be free from contaminates such as water, sand, dirt, rust, or other materials that could damage the aircraft or its engine. AOPA also requires the aircraft operator to have the fuel checked regularly for any water or contaminants. The fuel filter and fuel tank must also be inspected frequently for signs of leaks or trouble. If any of these requirements are not met, the aircraft operator may be subject to fines and/or other legal action.
