What are the laws regarding aircraft accident investigation?

In Maryland, the law regarding aircraft accident investigation is outlined by Title 6 of the Maryland Code, titled Aviation. Under Section 6-203, the Maryland State Police are responsible for investigating an aircraft accident or incident and determining its probable cause. As part of the investigation, the State Police will collect evidence from the scene and interview witnesses and the aircraft pilots or operators. In the event of a fatal accident, the Maryland State Police will coordinate with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in order to determine the cause of death for each individual involved. Additionally, the Maryland State Police will work with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) to investigate more serious aircraft accidents. The NTSB is responsible for conducting a full investigation and issuing a final report about its findings from the aircraft accident. The final report will include detailed information such as an analysis of the accident and a probable cause for the incident. Additional information may also be provided, such as safety recommendations for preventing similar accidents in the future. Once the investigation is complete, the State Police and NTSB will make the accident information available to the public by providing an online report. The report may also be submitted to the Maryland Aeronautical Commission. In order to ensure the public is aware of the findings, the State Police and NTSB will provide copies of the final report to the media and to the families of those involved in the accident.
