What are the federal laws governing aircraft noise?
The federal laws governing aircraft noise are set out in the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Part 36, Noise Standards regulation (FAR Part 36). FAR Part 36 requires that aircraft noise be kept at a level no greater than set limits. Aircraft noise levels are measured in dB or A-weighted decibels (dBA). The FAA also sets rules for how aircraft noise is measured and enforced. To ensure compliance with federal laws, Louisiana imposes specific rules and regulations on aircraft noise in the state. These regulations also include requirements for limiting the noise created by aircraft operations. Aircraft operators in Louisiana must demonstrate that their aircraft meet the noise levels set out in both the FAR Part 36 standards as well as the state regulations. In addition to the state regulations, some local governments in Louisiana may have their own aircraft noise regulations. Depending on the local rules, aircraft noise may be subject to additional limits.
