What are the different types of alimony?

Alimony, or spousal support, is a payment made by one spouse to the other to support them financially. In Maryland, there are four main types of alimony, depending on the type of marriage and the length of the marriage. Temporary alimony is financial support paid from one spouse to the other while a divorce is pending. This economic assistance is meant to help the supported spouse get back on their feet during this difficult time. Rehabilitative alimony is another type of alimony available in most cases. This financial assistance is meant to help the supported spouse get back on their feet and become self-sufficient. This type of alimony is usually only awarded for a limited time, with the possibility of modification if needed. Lump-sum alimony is a one-time payment made to the supported spouse. This payment can be fixed or variable and is typically awarded when the length of the marriage is very short. Lastly, periodic alimony is an ongoing payment made to the supported spouse for an indefinite period of time. This type of alimony is more commonly awarded in long-term marriages, though it is not guaranteed. No matter what type of alimony is awarded, the court will consider factors such as the length of the marriage, each spouse’s income, and the ability of the paying spouse to make the payments. The goal of alimony is to ensure that the supported spouse can maintain financial stability.
