Can alimony be altered or revoked?

In Michigan, alimony can be altered or revoked depending on the circumstances. It’s not uncommon for an alimony arrangement to be modified after some time has passed and either spouse has experienced major life changes. To make changes to an alimony order, the party seeking to make the modification must file a petition with the court. This petition will include details of the changes being sought and the reasons why the modifications are necessary. The other spouse will then have the opportunity to respond to the petition. In some cases, an agreement between both parties can be made without the need for court involvement. If an agreement is reached, it must be submitted to the court for approval. If the court determines that a modification is necessary, it can either reduce the amount of alimony owed or revoke it entirely, depending on the circumstances. For instance, if the paying spouse no longer makes enough money to afford alimony payments or if the spouse receiving the alimony has become financially independent, then the court can either reduce the amount or terminate the payments altogether. In addition, the court may also consider other factors such as the length of the marriage, the age and health of the spouses, any new evidence that has been presented and the current financial needs of the receiving spouse before deciding whether to make any changes.
