Are living expenses included in an alimony award?

In Oklahoma, living expenses are not necessarily considered when determining the amount of alimony to be paid. Alimony, which is also referred to as spousal support or spousal maintenance, is a court-ordered payment that one spouse must pay to the other following a divorce. This support is designed to help the financially dependent spouse cover their needs after the divorce is final. When determining the amount of alimony to be paid, Oklahoma courts look at the length of the marriage, the spouses’ income and expenses, the standard of living during the marriage, the ages and health of both spouses, and the paying spouse’s ability to provide spousal support. Living expenses are not typically included in the amount awarded by the court and should not be used interchangeably with alimony. However, living expenses can be part of the spousal support agreement if the parties involved mutually agree. If, for example, the paying spouse agrees to help the other pay rent or utility bills, this is considered living expenses and not alimony. In Oklahoma, living expenses are not required by law and the parties will need to mutually agree to include those expenses in the alimony agreement.
