Does alimony have to be paid for the entire length of the marriage?

In Oklahoma, alimony does not have to be paid for the entire length of the marriage. The length of time for which alimony is paid varies from case to case, and is usually based on factors such as the length of the marriage, the ages of the parties, the income and earning capacity of the parties, and the standard of living the parties had before the divorce. The court looks to a variety of factors when deciding how long alimony should be paid, including, but not limited to, the length of the marriage, the ages of the parties, the parties’ respective income and earning capacity, the standard of living the parties had during the marriage, the marital lifestyle, the parties’ health, the parties’ educational level, and the parties’ contributions to the marriage. In Oklahoma, permanent alimony is rarely awarded. Alimony is usually considered for a fixed period of time, which may be adjusted if there are significant changes in the parties’ circumstances. Alimony may be terminated if the recipient remarries or cohabitates. If alimony is granted for a specific period of time, and the recipient does not remarry or cohabitate, the court may consider extending alimony if the recipient can demonstrate they cannot become self-supporting at the end of the court-ordered period.
