Are animal rights protected by international law?
Animal rights are not currently protected by an overarching, international law. While there have been some attempts to establish international animal rights treaty, such as the Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare, these treaties are not necessarily legally binding. In addition, few countries have legally enforced laws to protect animal rights. Within the United States, the federal government does not have a significant presence in legislation pertaining to animal rights, but each individual state does. In Indiana, the State Animal Care and Control Act of 1987 provides the basis of animal rights protection in the state. This Act focuses largely on humane practices on pets including proper shelter, food, and water, while also prohibiting dog fighting and the use of animals intended for food or other products from being kept as pets. At a global level, organizations such as the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) are in place to ensure humane treatment of animals is practiced by its members. OIE works to promote the responsible management and use of animals throughout the world. In addition, the World Animal Protection organization works to end animal suffering through strong legislation, scientific research, and public education. Even though animal rights are not protected by a single, international law, there are organizations and state governments in place to ensure that animals around the world are treated humanely. Through the efforts of these organizations, animal rights are becoming increasingly recognized in different countries around the world.
