Are animal rights protected by international law?

Animal rights are not specifically protected by international law, however, there is an increasing amount of international legislation aimed at protecting animals and their welfare. The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) has created an international code of ethics for animal welfare, which is supported by the United Nations. Additionally, Article 13 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that everyone has the right to freedom and security of person, which includes animals. On a state level, South Carolina is slowly recognizing the importance of animal rights, as legislation is in place to protect companion animals, endangered species, and livestock. For example, South Carolina is one of the few states that has a Felony Animal Cruelty Law, which prohibits cruelty and makes it a felony if an animal is severely injured or killed. Additionally, the state has an Animal Protection Law which states that all animals must be treated humanely and prohibits activities such as animal fighting. Overall, while animal rights are not specifically addressed in international law, more and more countries and states are recognizing the importance of animal welfare. South Carolina, in particular, is taking steps to protect animals from mistreatment and abuse, and to ensure their right to humane treatment.
