How are animal rights violations punished?
In Minnesota, animal rights violations are considered criminal misdemeanors and are punishable by fines and/or jail time. Animal cruelty can be charged as either a misdemeanor or a gross misdemeanor, depending on the severity of the offense. Misdemeanor violations, such as causing pain or distress to an animal, are punishable by up to 90 days in jail, a $1,000 fine, or both. Gross misdemeanor violations, such as torturing an animal, are punishable by up to one year in jail, a $3,000 fine, or both. In addition, a person convicted of animal cruelty can be ordered to undergo psychological or veterinary evaluations, to seek counseling, and/or to pay restitution for the cost of caring for the animal, as ordered by the court. Additionally, depending on the circumstances, animal cruelty could be considered a felony offense, punishable by up to three years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. Additionally, any person convicted of a felony animal cruelty offense is prohibited from owning, caring for, possessing, or living with an animal for a ten-year period. Overall, animal cruelty in Minnesota carries serious penalties and those found guilty of violating animal rights laws may face stiff fines, jail time, and even a ban on owning an animal depending on the severity of the offense.
