Are there any laws that protect animals from being used for animal rodeos?

In California, there are laws that protect animals from being used in rodeos. The California Health and Safety Code sets out the general regulations for how animals can be used in rodeos. The main regulation is that animals must not be subjected to physical cruelty or abuse while in a rodeo. This includes prohibition of pricking, prodding, or otherwise “spurring” animals, as well as providing electric cattle prods. It is also prohibited to attach foreign objects such as bucking straps or spurs in order to increase the animal’s reaction. The code also requires that events use “approved animals,” which are typically horses and bulls over 18 months old. Other provisions include regulations on the length of events and the size of the arena, requirements for proper restraining of animals, and limits on the duration of particular barrels, roping, and bucking events. In addition, California also has laws that protect animals from being used for entertainment purposes. There are laws that prohibit cockfights and dogfights and prohibit animal performances in which the animal’s safety or welfare is at risk. Animal rights activists in California have also succeeded in having the state enact a number of additional means of protecting animals from being used in rodeos, such as banning clowns that perform inside the rodeo ring and banning certain cattle-prodding devices.
